Respondents in households with low levels of media contact and those who read tabloid newspapers were also more likely to express greater concern than those in households with higher levels of media contact. We also found that low income respondents reported greater climate-concern behaviors than their higher income counterparts. We found that respondents in high socioeconomic groups tended to report more climate-concerned patterns of behavior than people in lower social strata. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2007 European Social Survey (ESS) conducted in 20 European countries using a multilevel logistic regression to predict individuals’ perceptions of climate change from their household level characteristics.

The aim of this study was to explore the influence of household level variables such as household income and wealth, and household communication behavior, such as media contact, on the responses of individuals’ to the issue of climate change.
